A 2015 study found ninety-eight percent of lead-acid batteries are recycled in developed countries, whereas only five percent of lithium-ion batteries are recycled in the European Union. More countries mandate disposal of lead-acid batteries than other types of batteries because of their toxicity and known harm to the environment.
