Edible Food Recovery Grant

The purpose of this grant is to assist Edible Food Recovery Organizations (FROs) with preventing edible surplus food from going to compost or disposal by ensuring it is being recovered and used to feed people who need it. The funds provided for this grant are meant to bolster the existing edible food recovery network in West Contra Costa County to reduce food insecurity, as well as conserve natural resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by preventing edible food from going to waste. This grant supports Senate Bill (SB) 1383.

Program Goals:

  • Prevent surplus edible food from going to waste.
  • Ensure surplus food is put to its highest and best use.
  • Reduce food insecurity in West Contra Costa County.
  • Send less surplus edible food to compost or disposal.

Funding amounts:

  • $100,000 total funds available. Up to $20,000 per applicant request subject to RecycleMore’s discretion.
  • Total funding requests less than $1,000 will not be awarded. Multiple categories of funding may be awarded to applicants

Who can apply:

This grant is available to registered 501(c) or 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations with edible food recovery programs. Organizations must be located in RecycleMore’s service area including Richmond, El Cerrito, San Pablo, Hercules, Pinole and parts of Unincorporated West Contra Costa County: Bayview, East Richmond Heights, El Sobrante, Montalvin Manor, North Richmond, Rollingwood and Tara Hills.

Eligible organizations must:

  • Prevent and/or recover surplus edible food from going to waste.
  • Provide meals to disadvantaged community members or redistribute recovered food to other organizations that provide meals to disadvantaged community members.
  • Value equity in their mission and inclusivity in organizational practices.

Eligible equipment requests:

Equipment/supplies must be directly related to edible food recovery or distribution and be utilized by the organization within six months of funding. Multiple pieces of equipment or supplies may be purchased with grant funds.
