RecycleMore Used Motor Oil

If not properly disposed of, motor oil can be toxic to your health, animals, and the environment, due to the chemicals and heavy metals.  Therefore, it is illegal to pour used oil down any drain, into the soil, or to throw used oil and filters in the trash.  If you do not take your vehicle to a service center and change the oil yourself, there are many options available for you to dispose of your used oil properly. Recycle them at no cost to residents of West Contra Costa County by following the instructions below.

Never Mix With Other Chemicals

Service stations will not accept motor oil that has been contaminated with other products like antifreeze. Don’t mix your motor oil with anything else.

Don’t Dump in Trash or Down Drain

Used motor oil is a major contaminant of waterways, so never dump down the drain or in the trash. Filters also leak toxic materials into waterways, which are slow to break down in the environment.

HANDLING

Drain & Seal

Drain used oil from the engine and/or the oil filter into the drainer(s)*.  Seal the lid for the plastic oil drainer. For the oil filter, place the drained oil filter into a leak proof zip-locked bag and seal it.

*Oil drainers and oil filter drainers are provided to you free of charge by RecycleMore through the City of El Cerrito, Republic Services, and at local events such as the Pinole Car Show and the Used Oil Recycling Events during the summer.

Transport

The legal transport limit is no more than 15-gallons (or 125-pounds) of household hazardous waste per vehicle per visit. Individual containers are limited to 5-gallon capacity.
